Pub 2: It's ALL Just an Illusion
In “A Streetcar Named Desire,” written by Tennessee Williams, the character Stella states "I couldn't go on believing her story and live with Stanley" (Stella, 1232). This means that the illusion she has with loving Stanley will be destroyed if she believes Blanche. The illusion of love between Stella and Stanley is built on sexual needs, and with the story with Blanche being raped by Stanley, the illusion would be completely destroyed. Stanley is just a low life, abusive, alcoholic husband who doesn't care for his wife and her sister all that much. In the 1940’s, women could leave their husbands, but it was very uncommon and they would be looked down upon, so that is why she made this fantasy. She will now realize that all of this is a fantasy if she believes Blanche, so she is conflicted with what to do. This also shows that living in a fantasy is much more desired than reality and that it happens in the real world as well.
In today's world, a major problem that people choose to ignore is global warming and climate change. There are many problems facing us and many people think that it does not exist, like our president. He has said things like “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive” (Trump twitter). The most powerful man in the country is living in a fantasy saying that climate change is not real, even though it is having real impacts on our world. Also, the fact that we cannot feel the effects of global warming and climate change because its cold out, further enhances the fantasy that it is not real. However, there are people that do see a problem about the climate, but not enough. Too many people do not agree with the concept, therefore, there is not enough support to help the cause.
Climate Change has been proven by many scientists. About 90% of the scientific community believes in climate change and says it is a real danger. In the article Land Aridization in the Context of Global Warming – a Case Study of Transbaikalia, it states “Global warming is confirmed by long-term data from the network of stations of the World Meteorological Organization and from national meteorological networks. From 1860 to 1998 global temperatures from the Arctic, the taiga, dry steppes, high mountains, the tropics and the Dry Valleys of Antarctica have risen by about 0.8 °С” (Land Aridization in the Context of Global Warming). This shows that many people are living a lie, much like Stella with Stanley. As well as this, it states “In Russia, temperatures are increasing at a more pronounced rate than elsewhere in the world; this is especially the case in the territory of Transbaikalia (Kulikov et al. 2008) where temperatures have increased about 2.5 C. Other researchers emphasize the accelerated warming in Cisbaikalia and Transbaikalia as well” (Land Aridization in the Context of Global Warming). This also shows how even if we don’t feel it in America, that does not mean it is not real. This relates to Stella because she does not know if Blanche’s story is true, therefore she can make the argument that it did not happen, and that Stanley is still perfect for her.
So furthermore, Stella is living in a complete fantasy with Stanley, much like a large percentage of the population with climate change. Stella does not want to believe Blanche, but at the same time she does want to believe her. If Stella does believe Blanche, her vision of Stanley would be destroyed, much like if people believed climate change, everyone would be forced to see the problem with the planet. It’s nice to believe that there is nothing wrong, but sometimes you have to deal with the truth, and it may be ugly.
