Pub 3: Martin Luther King Said...

The dictionary definition of egalitarianism is the doctrine that all people are equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities. There are many places where this is true, somewhat true, and completely false. I’m America, this statement is fact, however in North Korea, this statement is fiction. A time in America when this was not true was in the 1950’s and 60’s with equal rights for African Americans. Martin luther King said “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed." What this quote means is that freedom is not given, but taken. People must ban together to get what they want, not just expect it. Nothing in the world works that way. In the 60’s, protests like sit-ins and boycotts. That is how African Americans won their rights.
The short story “A White Woman Of Color” Julia Alvarez feels like she does not belong with her race and nationality. She states she can have harder times getting a job if they know her actual race. In the quote “If I kept my cultural color to myself, I was ‘no problem’” (A White Woman of Color) shows that her race is a problem and is unequal to the majority. This is basically the opposite of egalitarianism but it proves MLK’s quote about having to fight for rights and freedom.
Today, North Korea shows the complete opposite of what Martin Luther King said. In the index of economic freedom posted by global edge, the index of freedom is a 5.8 out of 100 (global edge). The government is a complete dictatorship. All of the citizens of North Korea are brainwashed by the government. This goes to show how without fighting for freedom, man will take over in any way he wants. This is also shown with the American revolution. All Americans fought for their freedom and rights, which they eventually won. This proves the concept of egalitarianism and what Martin Luther King said.
