Pub 5: Poetry

Option 1: In the poems Divorce by Billy Collins, and Our Many Never Endings by Courtney Queeney, they share a similar theme about dying love. Even though the two poems are a little different in meaning, they are similar in message. A song that relates to these two poems is Bringin’ on the Heartbreak by Def Leppard. This song also shares the theme of dying love but the message is not quite the same as the poems. These pieces also share a similar tone with each other as well.
In Divorce, the main message of the poem is how a couple is when they are splitting up. The poem is short, but absolutely brilliant. The poem reads “Once, two spoons in bed, now tined forks. Across a granite table and the knives they have hired" (Billy Collins). The comparison to people and kitchen utensils is amazing. The couple, when they are together, are like spoons. How a spoon can scoop and hold things, like soup, it can support the liquid. Your spouse should be able to support you the way a spoon can support food or soup. However, when they are turned into forks, it does not support anything because of the gaps in the tines. The spoons represent a happy, stable marriage while the forks represent a failing marriage. The granite represents the cold surface in which these problems lie. Granite is usually hard and cold to the touch, which symbolizes the divorce. The knives that the “forks” hire are the lawyers that are cutting away at what used to be a healthy, loving relationship. Even though this poem is just four lines, it conveys a huge message of what divorce feels like and looks like. This is where the theme of the poem, dying love, comes in. The tone of this poem is obviously a depressing one. After all, it is about divorce. It’s tone is depressing, melancholy, slow, and bitter. The speaker seems to be an outside source looking down on a couple going through hard times and getting this divorce.
The other poem Our Many Never Endings also has the theme of dying love. The poem goes “You entered the bedroom and fell to your knees. I wait the rest of my life to hear you say, I made a mistake. Inside my chest, a mangle. Inside yours, a deflating balloon. You took the vacuum cleaner, the ironing board, the dish rack and left me some lint, an iron to scorch shirts, one chipped plate. I would like to say at least we perfected entrances and exits, like professional stage actors honing their craft, but even that’s a fantasy. Mostly on TV the lions ate the hyenas but sometimes the hyenas formed a posse, and tore a lion up. Occasionally you came in out of the rain and I was glad to have you” (Courtney Queeney). The whole poem is spoken either a man or a woman telling about her love falling apart. The part when the speaker says I waited for you to say I've made a mistake, clearly shows that the two are butting heads. The couple has also split up because the speakers lover has taken half of everything and left him or her with the other half. The line about the hyenas is also brilliant at symbolizing the couple. Taking on the lion, or the world together is easy, but when they are separated, they are going to get ripped apart by the lion. Overall, the tone of this poem is the same as Divorce. Depressive and gloom. And the reason why these two poems are similar is because dying love usually ends up in divorce, if they are married.
The song Bringin’ on the Heartbreak also share the same theme. The title says heartbreak, showing that it has that theme. There are many lyrics that also show this theme active in the song. The lyric “You're bringin' on the heartache, takin' all the best of me” shows that this woman is draining him out of life, she's breaking his heart (Def Leppard). There are many comparisons the singer makes to his love draining him of happiness and love. For example, the lyric “Oh, you're like a candle, your flame slowly fadin' Burnin' out and burnin' me” shows a comparison about his lover draining him (Def Leppard). This song is a slow song, and the tone, like the other poems, is depressed and sad.
These poems and this song all shares a common theme, but all shares its message a little differently. For the song, it tells of how the singers lover is draining him from the inside out. The poem Our Many Never Endings tells the story of an actual breakup going through, where one person is taking half of everything and how you can see them drifting apart now. The poem Divorce shows and actual divorce taking place but told in a creative way. All these three literature pieces tell a story. First, one person starts feeling something is not working. Next a fight happens where they decide to split apart, and finally the divorce happens. It all tells a story of a couple and their love dying out.
Furthermore, these three pieces all share a similar message, told differently. They told a story, which is why they went together perfectly. The theme of dying love is a serious one, and is prevalent in many works of literature.
